15.00 Climate of the future clues from the past
  • I'll explore how climate has changed in deep geological time and see what that can tell us about climate change in the 21st century. I'll ask the question, have human activities on planet Earth now become so profound that we are living in a new Epoch of geological time characterised by us? And, I'll discuss some of the problems of sustainable development if climate change continues unchecked in the 21st century.
  • Dr Mark Williams Reader, Department of Geology University of Leicester
15.20 “Sustainability”- what is coming up?
  • “As words such as ‘sustainability’, ‘climate change’ and ‘responsibility’ have climbed to the top of political and corporate agendas, it is time to assess what the future might hold. In my talk, I would like to draw out a few trends and challenges that are bound to change the landscape further, as sustainability continues its journey towards the mainstream. In the face of adversity, we need to use our imagination to envisage scenarios that are not just ‘likely’ but, more importantly, ‘desirable’”

In the debate about responsibility – is it governments who needed to legislate, corporations who needed to green up their act, or individuals who needed to change their behaviour - we seem to ignore the fact that governments and corporations are made up of people. This give us, as individuals, the the power to change our organisations from within, to set them on to more sustainable, and ultimately, more successful paths.'
